SCRANTON – John Kyle Smith, a 40-year-old man from Schuylkill Haven, was charged with methamphetamine trafficking after a federal grand jury indicted him on June 4, 2024.
According to the indictment, Smith possessed methamphetamine with the intent to distribute it in Schuylkill County on February 29, 2024. This alleged offense has serious consequences, with a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a fine.
The investigation into Smith’s alleged activities was a collaborative effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General Bureau of Narcotics Investigations (BNI). Assistant United States Attorney Jeffery St John is prosecuting the case.
Smith’s case is part of the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by bringing together law enforcement and communities. The program focuses on fostering trust and legitimacy, supporting community-based organizations, setting enforcement priorities, and measuring results.
In a statement, United States Attorney Gerard M. Karam highlighted the importance of the PSN program, saying, ‘This case is a prime example of the work being done to keep our communities safe.’ He added that the collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the community is crucial in preventing and addressing violent crime.
It’s worth noting that an indictment is merely an allegation, and all individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Smith’s case will proceed through the federal court system, with a trial date to be determined. The outcome of this case will be closely watched, as it serves as an example of the DOJ’s commitment to combating violent crime and keeping communities safe.
