Arlington, TX – David Hunt, Baylon Hunt, and Corey Burt were sentenced to prison this week for their involvement in a multimillion-dollar tax refund fraud scheme. David Hunt received 92 months, Baylon Hunt 38 months, and Corey Burt 94 months following a jury trial. A fourth family member convicted in the case is scheduled for sentencing in May.
The group, operating out of Arlington, Texas and Long Beach, Mississippi, filed fraudulent tax returns in the names of trusts they controlled, seeking over $8.5 million in illegitimate refunds. Baylon Hunt and another co-conspirator furthered the scheme by submitting falsified financial instruments and altered money orders to the IRS.
Despite receiving warning letters from the IRS, the defendants continued to file false returns and supporting documentation. The scheme resulted in the co-conspirators illegally obtaining substantial tax refunds.
The investigation was conducted by the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation.
