NEW ORLEANS, LA – David Pick, a former accountant, admitted in federal court today to systematically pilfering over $140,000 from his employer, a company identified in court documents only as Company A. The scheme, spanning nearly two years, saw Pick abusing his position of trust to fund a lavish personal lifestyle on the company dime.
According to prosecutors, Pick was employed by Company A from August 2016 until June 2018, where his responsibilities included managing the firm’s credit card accounts. Instead of responsibly handling these accounts, Pick allegedly began diverting funds for his own personal expenses – a brazen betrayal of the trust placed in him.
The total amount stolen clocked in at a staggering $140,791.21. Investigators from the U.S. Secret Service uncovered the fraud, piecing together a pattern of unauthorized charges and tracing the funds back to Pick’s personal accounts. The details of how Pick managed to conceal the theft for so long remain largely under wraps, but sources suggest a deliberate effort to manipulate records and exploit weaknesses in Company A’s internal controls.
If convicted, Pick faces a harsh penalty. He’s looking at up to 20 years behind bars, followed by three years of supervised release. On top of that, a hefty $250,000 fine and a $100 special assessment fee loom large. The U.S. Attorney’s Office is making an example of this case, sending a clear message that white-collar crime will not be tolerated.
U.S. Attorney Strasser publicly commended the Secret Service agents who diligently investigated this matter, highlighting their crucial role in bringing Pick to justice. The prosecution is being spearheaded by Assistant U.S. Attorney G. Dall Kammer, a supervisor within the General Crimes unit, ensuring a rigorous legal battle ahead.
This case underscores the pervasive threat of internal fraud, even within seemingly secure organizations. Company A is reportedly cooperating fully with investigators, conducting an internal review to identify and rectify any vulnerabilities that allowed Pick’s scheme to flourish. The Eastern District of Louisiana will see Pick sentenced in the coming months.
