Man Convicted of Racketeering in Nevada
A federal jury in Las Vegas has convicted David Ray Camez, 22, of Phoenix, Ariz., of participating in a racketeer influenced corrupt organization and conspiracy to participate in a racketeer influenced corrupt organization.
The conviction is the first in ‘Operation Open Market,’ an investigation into a sophisticated cybercrime organization that operated a worldwide online marketplace for stolen personal and financial information.
Camez faces up to 20 years in prison on each count and fines of up to $250,000. He is scheduled to be sentenced on April 10, 2014.
The investigation into the Carder.su organization began in March 2007, after the United States Secret Service, Homeland Security Investigations, and other federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies began investigating a pattern of credit and debit card fraud.
It is estimated that the Carder.su organization had over 5,500 members in July 2011, with different roles including moderators, reviewers, and vendors who advertised and sold illicitly obtained data and services.
The organization operated an internet forum where members could purchase stolen personal and financial information, as well as share knowledge of various fraud schemes.
Five others have pleaded guilty, seven are scheduled for trial in February 2014, and the rest are fugitives. The investigation is ongoing, and more arrests are expected in the coming months.
The case is a reminder of the growing threat of cybercrime and the importance of law enforcement working together to combat it.
