⏱ 2 min read

In a bid to curb gun violence in Dayton, Ohio, federal and local law enforcement officials have brought charges against eight individuals for violating federal firearms laws. The defendants, including JaMichael Craver and Terrence Gay, were charged with various crimes, including being felons in possession of firearms, assaulting federal agents, and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. The charges were filed as part of a downtown gun violence initiative, which aims to reduce violent crime in the area. The initiative is a collaboration between the US Attorney’s Office, the Dayton Police Department, and other law enforcement agencies.

JaMichael Craver, one of the defendants, was arrested on March 30 after fleeing from a vehicle being tracked by Dayton police officers and the Ohio State Highway Patrol. He was found to be in possession of a loaded 9mm handgun and was wanted on multiple state charges, including aggravated trafficking in drugs and having weapons while under disability. Craver has a history of violent crime, having previously been convicted of aggravated robbery and kidnapping.

Terrence Gay, another defendant, was charged with assaulting federal agents with a deadly weapon, attempted murder of federal agents, and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. Gay was a federal fugitive out of Missouri who had failed to surrender after being sentenced for drug trafficking in 2021. The charges against Gay and the other defendants demonstrate the commitment of law enforcement agencies to reducing gun violence in Dayton and holding those who break the law accountable.

The US Attorney’s Office has made it clear that it will pursue federal charges against individuals who illegally possess or use firearms in Dayton and other parts of Southern Ohio. The initiative is part of a broader effort to reduce violent crime and make communities safer. With the help of local law enforcement agencies, the US Attorney’s Office is working to identify and prosecute individuals who pose a threat to public safety.
