Two Teens Sentenced to Prison in DC Carjacking Case

Washington D.C. – Two teenagers, Deandre Bullock and Darius McNeal, were sentenced to prison terms for their roles in a pair of violent carjackings in Southeast Washington earlier this year.

Bullock, 17, and McNeal, 18, both of Washington, D.C., were charged as adults due to the nature of the offenses. They pled guilty in April 2018 to various charges stemming from the crimes.

According to court documents, the first incident occurred on February 4, 2018, at the Benco Shopping Center located at East Capitol Street SE and Benning Road SE. The victim parked his Jeep Compass in front of a carry-out restaurant and went inside to pick up food. As the victim returned to his vehicle, Bullock, McNeal, and three other individuals approached his car. McNeal approached the passenger side, while Bullock and two others approached the driver side and worked together to pull the victim from the driver’s seat, drag him to the ground, and assault him.

The group then got into the victim’s vehicle and drove away. In a separate incident on February 18, 2018, near Johnson Middle School, McNeal communicated with the victims about buying a pair of shoes through the OfferUp app. When the victims arrived, McNeal and another member of the group approached them and asked to see the shoes. Bullock and another individual then approached, with Bullock wearing a mask and carrying a black and silver handgun with a laser sight. Bullock ordered one of the victims out of the car and to the ground at gunpoint, while the other individual demanded the victim’s car keys and phone.

In announcing the sentences, U.S. Attorney Jessie K. Liu commended the work of the Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, including Paralegal Specialist Tiffany Fogle and Victim/Witness Advocate James Brennan. Assistant U.S. Attorney Natasha Smalky investigated and prosecuted the case with assistance from Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer Kerkhoff.

Bullock was sentenced to 10 years in prison, while McNeal received a 9-year sentence. Both defendants will be placed on three years of supervised release following their prison terms.

Both incidents left the community shaken, and the sentences handed down are a testament to the dedication of law enforcement and prosecutors in seeking justice for the victims. As the community continues to grapple with the aftermath of these violent crimes, it is clear that the perpetrators will face the consequences of their actions.
