June 13, 1919 – In a shocking turn of events, John Bodine Lunger, a 55-year-old insurance official, met his untimely end at the esteemed Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York. Lunger, the vice president of the Quitable Assurance Society, was stricken with heart disease after attending a dinner at the luxurious hotel on Wednesday night, ultimately succumbing to his condition just a few minutes later.
Lunger’s life was a testament to hard work and dedication. Born in Asbury, New Jersey, 51 years ago, he was a graduate of the Centenary Collegiate Institute in Hackettstown, New Jersey. In 1880, at the tender age of 19, Lunger began his career as a clerk in the statistical department of the Prudential Insurance Company. His interests lay in actuarial work, and he went on to study the subject under the tutelage of D. Parks Fackler.
The young Lunger’s talents did not go unnoticed. In 1887, he was appointed actuary of the Prudential Insurance Company, a position he held until 1907. During his tenure, he played a significant role in the company’s growth and development. The following year, Lunger joined the New York Life Insurance Company as its managing actuary, a position he held until 1910. It was then that he took on the role of vice president of the Travelers Insurance Company, a position he held until his untimely death.
While Lunger’s sudden passing sent shockwaves through the insurance community, no foul play is suspected at this time. The cause of death is attributed to heart disease, a common affliction for those in high-pressure professions.
As the investigation continues, one thing is certain – John Bodine Lunger’s legacy will live on through his contributions to the insurance industry. His dedication, work ethic, and passion for actuarial work will be remembered for generations to come.
