Assault Rocks McLaughlin Community
McLaughlin, SD – In a shocking turn of events, Lehi James Demarrias, Sr., 31, of McLaughlin, South Dakota, has pleaded guilty to Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury.
According to court documents, the incident occurred on July 17, 2013, when a male victim was stabbed in the stomach. The victim, who was transported to a hospital in Bismarck, North Dakota, underwent emergency surgery due to the possibility of a ruptured organ.
The investigation, led by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Standing Rock Agency, revealed that Demarrias was responsible for the assault. As a result, Demarrias faces a maximum penalty of 10 years of imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and an additional 2 years of supervised release upon revocation.
Demarrias was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending sentencing, which has been set for December 30, 2013. Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley is prosecuting the case.
The conviction has sent shockwaves through the McLaughlin community, leaving residents in awe of the violence that has marred their once-peaceful town.
