Democrat Drought: Fort Worth’s Republican Party Sinks Under Weight of Gen. Rosencrans’ Popularity

In 1884, Fort Worth’s Democratic party proved once again that they are the dominant force in the region. Despite the Republican party’s best efforts, every shred of relief the city received was thanks to Democratic origin and Democratic effort.

The city’s Democratic party record on the Chinese question was solid, and it paid off big time. General William Rosecrans, the party’s representative on the Pacific coast, was a man of the people. He redeemed California from Republican control mainly on the issue of excluding Chinese immigrants, and the result was a solid Democratic delegation of six in the national House of Representatives, up from just two members previously.

At the last state election, General Rosecrans was elected governor by a landslide of over 20,000 votes, crushing his Republican opponent. And it wasn’t just the governor’s seat that fell to the Democrats – they also took control of the state administration. General Rosecrans’ reputation as a man of unimpeachable character, both in civil and military life, was a major factor in his election.

As a soldier, General Rosecrans’ career shone with even greater glory. His unblemished record has earned him a place in the hearts of the people, and it’s a testament to the power of the Democratic party in Fort Worth. The Republicans, on the other hand, are left to pick up the pieces and try to rebuild their crumbling party.

The writing is on the wall – Fort Worth is firmly in the grasp of the Democratic party, and it’s going to take a lot more than just opposition from the Republicans to change that.
