Denise Marie Meeks, a 37-year-old from Mineola, Texas, has been slammed with federal prison time for her involvement in drug trafficking and firearm possession, announced U.S. Attorney John M. Bales.
In a gritty courtroom revelation on Friday, Meeks pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and carrying a firearm during the commission of a drug trafficking offense. The Eastern District of Texas is where justice finally caught up with the 37-year-old woman, who was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Michael H. Schneider to 144 months in federal prison.
According to court documents, Meeks’s reign of terror over East Texas’s streets ended on July 19, 2012, when she was caught with over 20 grams of methamphetamine. She admitted her role and also confessed to using a firearm during her drug dealing escapades.
The indictment against Meeks came on December 6, 2012, marking the beginning of her downfall. The Drug Enforcement Administration and the Canton Police Department were instrumental in this case’s investigation, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Baldwin took charge of the prosecution.
Today’s sentence is a stark reminder that justice will not be evaded by those who think they can get away with drug trafficking and using firearms to fuel their criminal endeavors. The court also imposed a $2,000 forfeiture judgment against Meeks, ensuring that her ill-gotten gains are stripped from her.
As the Mineola woman serves out her sentence, law enforcement agencies continue to crack down on drug trafficking in Texas and beyond. For now, one less criminal is walking the streets of East Texas, but many more remain at large.
