RICHMOND, Va. – A Richmond woman has been brought to justice for her egregious crimes against the city’s most vulnerable citizens.
De’Nisha Juanita Wilson, 47, a former case worker at the Richmond Department of Social Services, pleaded guilty yesterday to mail fraud for abusing her authority to divert income and food-related benefits to herself.
According to court documents, Wilson’s scheme involved accessing the deceased woman’s personal identifying information, causing the issuance of new prepaid benefits cards, and directing those cards to herself. Wilson then used the prepaid benefits cards issued under the deceased woman’s name for her own purposes.
The scheme was halted in January 2020, and Wilson is scheduled to be sentenced on October 18. She faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. Actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties.
A total of more than $13,000 was diverted by Wilson, with approximately $8,000 being spent on food, entertainment, and other personal expenses. The brazen scheme has left many in the community shocked and outraged.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, the FBI’s Richmond Field Office, and the City of Richmond Office of the Inspector General made the announcement after U.S. District Judge John A. Gibney, Jr. accepted the plea.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin Elliker is prosecuting the case.
