A brutal assault has left a victim with serious bodily injury in New Mexico, and authorities are now seeking justice. Dennett Jerome Chee, 36, of Mescalero, New Mexico, has been charged with assault resulting in serious bodily injury in Indian Country.
According to the indictment, the assault occurred in May 2022 in Otero County, New Mexico, on the Mescalero Apache reservation. Chee allegedly assaulted a victim, resulting in serious bodily injury.
On January 10, a federal grand jury indicted Chee for his alleged role in the assault. The FBI and the Bureau of Indian Affairs investigated the case.
Assistant United States Attorney Eliot Neal is prosecuting the case. Chee, an enrolled member of the Mescalero Apache Tribe, will remain in custody pending trial, which has not been scheduled.
An indictment is only an allegation, and Chee is presumed innocent until proven guilty. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison.
The investigation into the assault is ongoing, and authorities are working to bring those responsible to justice.
As the case continues to unfold, the community is left to wonder about the motives behind the assault and the impact it has had on the victim.
