A Fort Washakie man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for committing the heinous crime of felony child abuse.
Denver Lee John, Sr., 44, was sentenced on August 21, 2023, by U.S. District Court Judge Alan B. Johnson.
According to evidence and court documents, John physically and mentally abused his children and the children of his now ex-wife over several years.
The abuse was nothing short of brutal, with John punching, pulling hair, throwing children against the wall, and even going so far as to throw tools and other objects at the children.
On one occasion, John severely burned a child’s hand by holding it on a stovetop burner. And on another occasion, he threw a screwdriver at a child which lodged in the child’s head.
John’s crimes also included threatening to separate a child from the family if that child told anyone what John was doing.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Indian Affairs investigated this crime, with Assistant United States Attorney Kerry J. Jacobson prosecuting the case.
John’s case, Case No. 22-00077-ABJ and 23-CR-00084-ABJ, serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of child abuse and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their crimes.
