Gaspar Mateo-Morales, a 41-year-old Guatemalan national, was found to be unlawfully present in the United States on June 28, 2026, in Jacksonville, Florida, after being deported three times. Mateo-Morales had previously been removed from the United States on February 25, 2011, March 25, 2011, and September 14, 2016. He was previously convicted of illegal re-entry on August 16, 2016.
Mateo-Morales faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison and subsequent removal from the United States if convicted. The case was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Florida Highway Patrol, and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Arnold B. Corsmeier.
This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative that aims to repel the invasion of illegal immigration and protect communities from violent crime. The operation marshals the full resources of the Department of Justice to achieve the total elimination of cartels and transnational criminal organizations.
The indictment alleges that Mateo-Morales did not apply for or receive permission from government authorities to re-enter the United States after his last removal. An indictment is only an allegation, and every defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
