BOSTON – Tanya James, 53, a Jamaican national with a history of drug trafficking, admitted in federal court yesterday to violating the law by illegally reentering the United States after being deported – not once, but twice. The plea brings James closer to facing serious consequences for flouting immigration laws and returning to a country she’d been ordered to leave.
James pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful reentry of a deported alien before U.S. District Court Judge Margaret R. Guzman. Sentencing is currently scheduled for September 3, 2025, giving the court time to weigh the severity of her repeated offenses. The indictment against James was handed down by a federal grand jury in June 2025, following her apprehension.
This isn’t James’s first brush with the American justice system. Back in 2003, she was convicted in the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts of possession of cocaine base with intent to distribute and distribution of cocaine base – a clear indicator of her involvement in the dangerous drug trade. That conviction led to her initial removal to Jamaica in 2004. But she returned, and was again ordered removed in 2011, finally being deported a second time in 2012.
Despite those deportations, James was discovered back on U.S. soil around May 12, 2025, having entered the country without any authorization. Her brazen disregard for the law has now landed her back in court, facing a potential prison sentence of up to 20 years. The charge also carries with it a potential three years of supervised release and a hefty fine of up to $250,000.
U.S. Attorney Leah B. Foley and Patricia H. Hyde, Field Office Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston, jointly announced the guilty plea. The government made it clear that upon completion of any sentence imposed, James will again be subject to deportation, a point driven home to send a clear message to those who attempt to circumvent immigration laws.
Judge Guzman will ultimately determine James’s fate, considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and relevant statutes. This case serves as a stark reminder that repeated violations of immigration law, particularly by individuals with a criminal history, will be aggressively prosecuted by federal authorities.
