Hard-hitting crime news from the federal front: Javier Aguilera Rosas, a 43-year-old Los Angeles resident who was previously deported, has pleaded guilty to serious charges of identity theft and selling fraudulent California driver’s licenses. According to court documents, Rosas was involved in transferring at least 20 false identification documents to unsuspecting buyers across the Eastern District of California between August 2020 and December 2023.
In what appears to be a sophisticated operation, buyers would submit their orders via text message, asking for fraudulent passports, driver’s licenses, and Social Security cards. Rosas would then send the fake IDs through the mail, at least four times including personal information of identity theft victims. One buyer alone used these false IDs for selling marijuana out of state, paying for rentals, and even passing Transportation Security Administration checkpoints.
The investigation into this case was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), with Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicole Moody handling the prosecution. The gravity of Rosas’s actions is underscored by the severe charges he faces: transfer of a false identity document, misuse of a social security number, and reentry of a removed alien.
Scheduled for sentencing on January 12, 2026, before U.S. District Judge William B. Shubb, Rosas could be looking at a maximum statutory penalty of 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. However, the actual sentence will be decided by the court after considering all applicable factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the sophisticated nature of identity theft operations and the potential consequences for those involved in such illicit activities.
