Amy C Fletcher, Wire Fraud and Tax Evasion, Vermont 2023

Fraud and Deceit in Derby Line

Amy C. Fletcher, a 44-year-old resident of Derby Line, Vermont, has pleaded guilty to committing wire fraud and filing a false tax return. The Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Vermont announced the guilty plea in federal court in Brattleboro.

According to the investigation, Fletcher embezzled money from Derby Line Ambulance (DLA) between 2009 and 2012 to pay personal expenses. She also filed a false 2011 tax return with the Internal Revenue Service, understating her income and taxes due.

Fletcher admitted to drawing over 400 checks on DLA’s business accounts, making them payable to herself and others for her benefit. The government stated that during the time period in question, DLA had business receipts of over $1.5 million, out of which Fletcher diverted over $250,000.

The U.S. District Court Judge J. Garvan Murtha ordered a presentence investigation and scheduled a sentencing hearing for December 17, 2015. Fletcher is represented by attorney David Sleigh of St. Johnsbury, while the United States is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney William Darrow.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation Division. The maximum possible penalty for the two offenses is 20 years in prison for the wire fraud and three years for the false tax filing.

Fletcher’s actions have left a trail of deceit and financial loss in her wake. Her guilty plea serves as a reminder of the consequences of committing fraud and tax evasion. The people of Derby Line and the surrounding communities can take comfort in knowing that justice is being served.
