PITTSBURGH – A Pittsburgh man is facing serious charges after allegedly robbing four banks in Allegheny County between December 2016 and January 2017, Grimy Times has learned.
A federal grand jury in Pittsburgh indicted Derek Hanner, 28, on four counts of armed bank robbery. Hanner is accused of hitting four different banks, including two Citizens Banks in Pittsburgh and the Brentwood Bank in Bethel Park.
According to the indictment, Hanner used a firearm during the robberies, placing innocent lives at risk. If convicted, he could face up to 25 years in prison at each count, along with a fine of $250,000, or both.
Hanner’s alleged crimes took place during a tumultuous period in the city’s history. While details of the robberies are scarce, investigators believe Hanner acted alone.
Assistant United States Attorney Caitlin A. Loughran is leading the prosecution against Hanner. The Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Pittsburgh Police Department, and the Bethel Park Police Department all contributed to the investigation.
An indictment is merely an accusation, and Hanner is considered innocent until proven guilty. If convicted, he could face a lengthy sentence, but his fate remains to be seen.
As the people of Pittsburgh continue to rebuild their communities, they can take comfort in knowing that authorities are working tirelessly to keep them safe. We will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
