Derek Southworth, 34, of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, was sentenced to time served (approximately 15 days in prison) for being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, a crime he committed in Massachusetts.
The crime was captured on audio-video recording on April 18, 2017, when Southworth provided an AK-47 style rifle and approximately 49 rounds of ammunition to a cooperating witness.
Southworth’s prior conviction makes him prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition.
The case is part of an ongoing effort to dismantle the Latin Kings, a violent criminal enterprise with thousands of members across the United States.
The Latin Kings adhere to a national manifesto, employ an internal judiciary and use a sophisticated system of communication to maintain the hierarchy of the organization.
Southworth is the 52nd defendant to be sentenced in the case, which was brought after a federal grand jury returned an indictment in December 2019 alleging racketeering conspiracy, drug conspiracy and firearms charges against dozens of leaders, members and associates of the Latin Kings.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Philip A. Mallard is prosecuting the case, which is part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) operation.
