Derrick Kennedy Crumpton, Racketeering Conspiracy, Tennessee 2023

A Memphis gang leader has been sentenced to 27 years in prison for his role in a racketeering conspiracy that spanned multiple states.

Derrick Kennedy Crumpton, 35, also known as ’38,’ was convicted of participating in both racketeering and drug conspiracies. He pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced by U.S. District Judge John T. Fowlkes Jr. on May 17, 2023.

Crumpton, who served as the ‘Assistant Governor’ of the Gangster Disciples in Tennessee, directed other members and associates in carrying out criminal activity, including murder, kidnapping, assault, witness intimidation, narcotics distribution, and weapons trafficking.

The Gangster Disciples is a highly organized national gang active in over 35 states, with a wide-ranging scope of crimes including murder, attempted murder, assault, and obstruction of justice.

The investigation into Crumpton’s activities was conducted by the FBI, ATF, Memphis Multi-Agency Gang Unit, and other local law enforcement agencies. Trial Attorneys Francesca Liquori and Marianne Shelvey of the Criminal Division’s Organized Crime and Gang Section, and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Beth Boswell and Samuel Stringfellow prosecuted the case.

Crumpton will also serve five years of supervised release following his prison term.

The sentencing is a significant blow to the Gangster Disciples’ operations in Tennessee, and a testament to the hard work of law enforcement agencies in bringing the organization’s leaders to justice.
