Felon in Possession of a Firearm Lands Former Centreville Firefighter in Hot Water

A shocking case of firearm possession has left the community stunned. Derrick N. Henry, a 44-year-old former firefighter for the Church Road Fire Protection District in Centreville, Illinois, pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm on November 24, 2014.

The United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, Stephen R. Wigginton, announced the guilty plea, which stems from a domestic violence conviction. According to court documents, Henry was serving a state sentence of intensive probation at the time of the offense.

On March 7, 2014, a St. Clair County probation officer conducted a compliance check on high-risk probationers, including Henry. During the search of his residence, five long guns were found in plain view, with one of the rifles loaded with a live round in the chamber.

Henry denied knowledge of the firearms, but the key to the locked bedroom containing the guns was found in his pants pocket. The discovery sparked a thorough investigation, involving multiple agencies, including the Illinois State Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the St. Clair County Probation Department.

Unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon is punishable by not more than 10 years in federal prison, and/or a $250,000 fine, or both, and not more than three years of supervised release. Henry will be sentenced on March 7, 2015.

The investigation was conducted by a probation compliance task force, which included agents from the Millstadt Police Department, Southwestern Illinois College Police Department, Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville Police Department, and the Marissa Police Department.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Steven D. Weinhoeft and Special Assistant United States Attorney Michael Hallock. Derrick N. Henry’s guilty plea serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of firearm possession by convicted felons.
