DES MOINES, Iowa – In a stunning blow to the fentanyl crisis in Des Moines, two alleged drug lords were sentenced on July 11, 2025, to federal prison for their role in a massive fentanyl trafficking ring.
Ajang Malou Wour, 43, and Omar Mohamed Nurani, 22, were caught red-handed after distributing over 60,000 fentanyl pills and 40 ounces of powder within an 18-month span. Their scheme began in the summer of 2023 when Wour started trafficking fentanyl pills following his release from federal supervised release.
Wour’s supply quickly expanded to include fentanyl powder, selling it to Nurani, who in turn sold the deadly substance to distributors and customers alike. Tragedy struck in June 2024 when a customer overdosed and died after taking fentanyl pills sold by Nurani.
Despite this惨剧, both men continued their ruthless trade until they were apprehended. Wour was sentenced to 144 months in prison, plus five years of supervised release, while Nurani received 120 months behind bars with four years of supervision to follow. Parole is non-existent in the federal system.
The investigation was led by the Des Moines Police Department, with assistance from the Ankeny Police Department and the Mid-Iowa Drug Enforcement Task Force. United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa announced the sentences, highlighting the severity of the charges and the impact on the community.
Fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid, has become the leading cause of drug overdose deaths in the United States, with youth ages 15 to 24 experiencing a more than doubling of fentanyl-related deaths between 2018 and 2022. The DEA’s “One Pill Can Kill” campaign aims to raise awareness about the dangers of counterfeit fentanyl-laced pills that mimic pharmaceuticals but contain lethal doses of the drug.
