DES MOINES, Iowa – A grim revelation has emerged in the corridors of Iowa Methodist Hospital as Victor Van Cleve, a former pharmacy technician, admitted to the heinous crime of tampering with fentanyl. The 29-year-old’s actions, which spanned from September 7, 2016, to October 2, 2016, have shocked the medical community.
In a chilling plea agreement, Van Cleve confessed to inserting a syringe into multiple fentanyl vials, stealing the potent substance with it, and injecting himself. The vials were then refilled with another solution before being returned to storage. This despicable act not only endangered patients but also compromised the integrity of the hospital’s pharmaceutical supplies.
The United States Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa, Marc Krickbaum, announced the guilty plea, while the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the FDA Office of Criminal Investigations conducted a thorough investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Bradley D. Price is handling the prosecution of this case.
Van Cleve’s actions were not only illegal but also put lives at risk. He now faces a harrowing sentence before Chief United States District Judge John A. Jarvey on July 10, 2018, at 1:30 pm.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers within healthcare facilities and the importance of stringent security measures to protect prescription medications.
