Daryl Grigsby, 57, of Dyersville, Iowa, was sentenced to 40 months in federal prison for aggravated identity theft and misuse of a Social Security Number, closing a chapter in a decades-long fugitive saga that began with a military conviction in the 1980s.
Grigsby pleaded guilty on September 6, 2017, to stealing another person’s identity and using it to live under the radar for years. The sentencing, handed down by U.S. District Judge Linda R. Reade in Cedar Rapids, includes a $200 special assessment, $19,401 in restitution to the Social Security Administration, and $46,118.48 to the State of Iowa.
Court records reveal Grigsby was convicted by court-martial for aggravated assault during his Army service. He fled military custody while facing additional charges, vanishing into a life of crime. In the 1990s, he was convicted of bank robbery in federal court in Oregon under the alias “Aaron Davis,” serving time before absconding from federal supervised release in 2001.
After his escape, Grigsby assumed the identity of another man, using his Social Security Number to obtain benefits, work, and live undetected—until his arrest in Iowa last year. Despite being taken into custody, he remains wanted by the U.S. Army, having once ranked on their most wanted fugitive list.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Anthony Morfitt and investigated by the Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General. Grigsby is currently in U.S. Marshals custody, awaiting transfer to a federal prison to begin his sentence.
There is no parole in the federal system. Grigsby will serve his full 40-month term followed by three years of supervised release.
