FORT MYERS, FL – Deshon G. Walker, 26, is looking at a lengthy federal prison sentence after admitting today to illegally possessing a loaded firearm and ammunition. Walker pleaded guilty to the charge in federal court, a violation of federal law due to a previous felony conviction.
The case unfolded after a routine traffic stop conducted by the Fort Myers Police Department. Officers discovered a loaded Glock pistol stashed under the seat where Walker was a passenger. Subsequent DNA analysis definitively linked Walker to the weapon, sealing his fate.
Federal law strictly prohibits convicted felons from owning or possessing firearms or ammunition. Walker’s prior conviction triggered the federal charge, carrying a severe penalty. He now faces a minimum mandatory sentence of 15 years in federal prison, with the potential for life behind bars.
U.S. Attorney Roger B. Handberg announced the guilty plea, highlighting the ongoing efforts to combat gun violence in the Middle District of Florida. The investigation was a joint effort between the Fort Myers Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark R. Morgan is prosecuting the case. This prosecution is part of the Department of Justice’s “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN), a comprehensive program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by fostering collaboration between law enforcement and local communities.
The PSN initiative, launched in May 2021, focuses on building trust, supporting community organizations dedicated to violence prevention, prioritizing strategic enforcement, and rigorously measuring the results. While a sentencing date has not yet been set, Walker’s conviction sends a clear message: illegally possessing a firearm while being a convicted felon will not be tolerated.
