Hugo Man Caged For Illegal Gun Stash
MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA – Maxie Darryl Caston, 58, of Hugo, Oklahoma, is headed to federal prison after a judge slammed him with a 12-month and one-day sentence for being a Felon in Possession of Firearm and Ammunition. The sentence, handed down by Chief U.S. District Judge Ronald A. White, also includes a three-year term of supervised release. Caston will be transferred to a Bureau of Prisons facility by the U.S. Marshals Service to begin serving his non-paroleable sentence.
The case unfolded after a raid on Caston’s Hugo residence on September 6, 2024. Investigators with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) executed a search warrant and turned up a significant cache of weapons: one revolver, one shotgun, four rifles, and a substantial quantity of ammunition. The problem? Caston already had a prior felony conviction on his record, making it illegal for him to own or possess any of it.
Caston pleaded guilty to the charge on March 14, 2025. The discovery of the firearms wasn’t a matter of simple possession; it represents a clear disregard for the law and a potential danger to the public. Authorities haven’t released details about the nature of Caston’s prior felony, but the conviction automatically disqualifies him from legally owning firearms.
Federal prosecutors, led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lewis M. Reagan, successfully argued for a stringent sentence, highlighting the seriousness of the offense and the need to keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of convicted felons. This case is being touted as a win for Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a collaborative initiative aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence across the country.
PSN focuses on building trust between law enforcement and communities, supporting violence prevention programs, and strategically targeting enforcement efforts. The Department of Justice relaunched a strengthened version of PSN in May 2021, emphasizing data-driven results and community engagement. This sentencing of Maxie Darryl Caston is presented as a direct result of those efforts.
The Eastern District of Oklahoma, like many areas across the nation, continues to grapple with gun violence. While this single conviction won’t solve the problem, it sends a message that those who illegally possess firearms will be held accountable. Caston’s case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of breaking the law, and the ATF’s commitment to enforcing federal gun laws.
