Los Angeles – Namir Malik Ali Greene, 23, of Los Angeles, will spend the next decade in federal prison after being sentenced for a brazen crime spree that terrorized local businesses and culminated in a dangerous carjacking. U.S. District Judge Sherilyn Peace Garnett handed down the 120-month sentence Wednesday, also ordering Greene to pay $17,084 in restitution to his victims.
The eight-day rampage began April 4th with a robbery at a Marina del Rey gas station. According to court documents, Greene posed as a customer before holding a clerk at gunpoint – the weapon later revealed to be a BB gun – and demanding cash. The clerk, fearing for their life, complied, handing over $700. Greene then proceeded to hit seven more gas stations and convenience stores across Los Angeles County, including locations in Long Beach, Whittier, South Los Angeles, Pomona, and Culver City.
The spree escalated on April 15th when Greene, again wielding the BB gun, carjacked the owner of a 2010 Honda Accord. He didn’t hold onto the stolen vehicle for long. Two days later, on April 17th, Greene led authorities on a reckless high-speed chase, clocking speeds exceeding 90 miles per hour. The pursuit, documented in court filings, involved near collisions with other motorists, driving against oncoming traffic, and ultimately crashing into a curb before Greene was apprehended.
Federal prosecutors detailed in court how Greene remained inside the Marina del Rey gas station after making a purchase, waiting for other customers to leave before initiating the robbery. He then presented a brown paper bag to the clerk and demanded all the money, brandishing what appeared to be a semi-automatic handgun. The sheer audacity of using a realistic-looking BB gun to commit armed robberies fueled the severity of the charges and ultimately, the lengthy sentence.
Greene pleaded guilty on September 23rd to one count of Hobbs Act robbery, a federal charge that covers robberies affecting interstate commerce. He has been held in federal custody since April 18th, awaiting sentencing. The investigation was spearheaded by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ Orange County Violent Crime Task Force (OCVCTF), with critical assistance from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Robbery Homicide Division and the Ontario Police Department.
Assistant United States Attorney Jena A. MacCabe of the Violent and Organized Crime Section successfully prosecuted the case. The OCVCTF, a collaborative effort between multiple federal and local agencies – including the ATF, Brea Police Department, Santa Ana Police Department, Orange County District Attorney’s Office, and Fullerton Police Department – demonstrates the commitment to tackling violent crime across Southern California. This sentence sends a clear message: arming oneself, even with an imitation weapon, to commit robbery and carjacking will be met with swift and severe justice.
