Lawrence Macken, Felon with Firearm, Stockton CA, 2023

SACRAMENTO, CA – Lawrence Macken, 45, of Stockton, is headed back to prison for nearly five years after being convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The sentence, handed down today, reflects a pattern of disregard for the law and a continued threat to public safety, authorities say.

On December 12, 2019, Stockton Police pulled over Macken’s vehicle. A search revealed a Bersa Firestorm .380 semi-automatic handgun stashed in the dash compartment, readily accessible to the driver. This wasn’t Macken’s first rodeo with illegal firearms. Court documents show he’s a repeat offender, already convicted twice before for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The list of Macken’s prior convictions doesn’t stop there. He’s also been convicted of two counts of assault and multiple vehicle thefts, painting a picture of a man with a long history of violent and property crimes. These prior convictions legally barred him from owning or possessing any firearm.

The case was a collaborative effort, spearheaded by the San Joaquin County District Attorney’s Office, the Stockton Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron D. Pennekamp led the prosecution, successfully arguing for a substantial sentence to keep Macken off the streets.

U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert framed the sentencing as part of “Project Safe Neighborhoods” (PSN), a federal program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by bringing together law enforcement and communities. The Justice Department recently revamped PSN, focusing on building trust with communities, supporting local violence prevention organizations, and prioritizing strategic enforcement.

Macken received a four-year and nine-month prison sentence. Whether this latest stint behind bars will finally deter Macken from a life of crime remains to be seen, but authorities hope it will contribute to a safer Stockton for its residents. The case underscores the ongoing battle against illegal firearms and the persistent challenge of repeat offenders.
