Local Man Sentenced for Fatal Vehicular Crash on Menominee Indian Reservation

A 22-year-old Keshena resident was sentenced to 42 months in prison for his involvement in a fatal vehicular crash on the Menominee Indian Reservation.

Desmond Waukau, an enrolled member of the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin, pleaded guilty on May 30, 2025, to involuntary manslaughter charges stemming from a crash that occurred on a state highway running through the reservation.

According to court documents, Waukau was driving at speeds in excess of the posted limit when he attempted to flee from tribal law enforcement vehicles. He failed to negotiate a turn onto Crowe Settlement Road, causing the crash that resulted in the death of a passenger.

Later examination of the vehicle revealed that Waukau was operating the vehicle at approximately 105 mph just seconds before the crash, and 65 mph at the time of impact.

U.S. District Judge William C. Griesbach noted the seriousness of the crime and emphasized the need to punish Waukau for his reckless actions, as well as to deter others in the community from engaging in similar behavior.

Waukau will also face three years of supervised release following his completion of the prison sentence. The case was investigated by the Menominee Tribal Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with assistance from the Wisconsin State Patrol.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew J. Maier prosecuted the case. For further information, contact Public Affairs Officer Steve Caballero at (414) 297-1700. Follow us on X for more local crime news.
