James Garner, Methamphetamine Distribution, West Virginia 2025

James Garner, 35, of Detroit, Michigan, was sentenced to five years in prison for his role in a Huntington-area methamphetamine trafficking organization. Garner, also known as ‘Jake,’ was one of five defendants to plead guilty in the case.

The sentencing comes after Garner’s guilty plea for distribution of five grams or more of methamphetamine. According to court documents, Garner sold approximately 50 grams of methamphetamine to a confidential informant on January 17, 2025, in exchange for $350. Over the course of several transactions, Garner admitted to selling a total of 436 grams of methamphetamine.

Garner’s role in the trafficking organization was directed by co-defendant Joshua Willie McCarver, 27, of Detroit, Michigan. McCarver arranged for Garner to conduct transactions at a Baer Street residence in Huntington, where Garner would sell the methamphetamine to confidential informants.

On May 31, 2025, law enforcement officers conducted a traffic stop in Huntington, during which Garner discarded a bag containing 459 grams of methamphetamine. The bag was recovered by officers, along with a bag containing 49.8 grams of fentanyl in the front passenger floorboard of the vehicle.

Garner’s sentencing is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating the invasion of illegal immigration, eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations, and protecting communities from violent crime.

United States Attorney Moore Capito commended the investigative work of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Cabell County Sheriff’s Office, the Mason County Sheriff’s Office, and the Huntington Police Department. United States District Judge Robert C. Chambers imposed the sentence, which will be followed by four years of supervised release.

Assistant United States Attorneys Joseph F. Adams and Courtney L. Finney prosecuted the case. Five defendants have pleaded guilty in the case, with charges against the remaining defendants, including McCarver, still pending.

Garner’s sentencing is a significant blow to the Huntington-area methamphetamine trafficking organization. As part of the operation, law enforcement agencies will continue to work to dismantle the organization and bring those responsible to justice.
