Detroit’s Deadliest Hot Spots Get Summer Surge Treatment

Detroit’s streets are about to get a lot more secure, at least in the city’s 8th and 9th Precincts, where the Summer Surge is set to take effect on Memorial Day and last until Labor Day. The Summer Surge is a targeted strategy aimed at reducing gun violence in these high-crime areas, and it’s being spearheaded by the One Detroit partnership, a coalition of community and law enforcement partners working together to develop and execute the best strategies to reduce violent crime through enforcement, prevention, and reentry.

The Summer Surge will focus on Detroit’s 8th and 9th Precincts, which have the highest rates of violence in the city. And this year, the One Detroit partners will also concentrate on Detroit’s public spaces to ensure they are safe. The strategy includes an enforcement strategy designed to prosecute the most violent individuals and crimes in federal court when that is possible. Under the strategy, violent felons arrested for illegally possessing firearms and those arrested with fully automatic firearms and firearms with obliterated serial numbers in Detroit’s 8th and 9th Precincts, or in Detroit’s parks, will be subject to immediate federal prosecution.

But the Summer Surge is not just about enforcement; it’s also about prevention. In an effort to deter violence and illegal gun possession, letters were sent to 351 individuals on probation, parole, or supervised release in the targeted areas, warning them of the enforcement strategy. But the letter did more than warn – it asked the recipient to be a part of the solution and to help make their neighborhood a safer place. And it invited the recipient to participate in a Peacenic in their neighborhood.

A Peacenic is a community event where residents can come for fun, engage with law enforcement, and obtain resources to improve the quality of their lives. This year’s Peacenics will take place on June 15, 2024, at Heilman Park (rain date June 23), and Saturday, June 29, 2024, at O’Hair Park (rain date June 30) from 3 PM to 7 PM. The events will feature vendors offering a variety of resources, including job training, literacy programs, mental health and medical screenings, utility assistance, educational and vocational opportunities, tutorial, career development programs, and more. And back by popular demand is the Peacenic Clothing Boutique where residents can purchase affordable, stylish clothing for themselves and their families.

The One Detroit partnership is made up of community and law enforcement partners who are working together to develop and execute the best strategies to reduce violent crime. The partnership includes the United States Attorney’s Office, the Detroit Police Department, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, the Michigan Department of Corrections, and community organizations such as Ceasefire Detroit and the Black Family Development organization.

The Summer Surge is a key part of the One Detroit partnership’s strategy to reduce gun violence in Detroit. By focusing resources on the city’s most violent neighborhoods and providing resources and support to residents, the partnership hopes to create a safer and more secure community for everyone. As US Attorney Dawn Ison said, “We are committed to making Detroit a safer city for all its residents. The Summer Surge is just one part of our ongoing effort to reduce gun violence and promote community safety.”
