DETROIT GUN VIOLENCE SPIKES AS SUMMER SURGE ENFORCEMENT BEGINS

DETROIT – As temperatures rise, so too does violent crime in Detroit’s high-crime areas. In a desperate bid to curb the violence, the One Detroit Partnership has launched its third annual Summer Surge enforcement strategy.

According to the Department of Justice, the Summer Surge will focus on the city’s 8th and 9th Precincts, which have the highest rates of violence. The precincts will see an increase in federal enforcement, with violent felons arrested for illegally possessing firearms facing immediate federal prosecution.

Along with enforcement, the One Detroit Partnership is also engaged in preventing crime through community events. Last week, letters were sent to 351 individuals on probation, parole, or supervised release in the targeted areas, warning them of the enforcement strategy and inviting them to participate in a Peacenic, a community event where residents can come for fun, engage with law enforcement, and obtain resources to improve their lives.

This year’s Peacenics will take place on June 15, 2024, at Heilman Park and June 29, 2024, at O’Hair Park, featuring vendors offering a variety of resources, including job training, literacy programs, mental health and medical screenings, and more.

The Summer Surge strategy is a product of the ongoing collaboration between the One Detroit partnership, which includes community and law enforcement partners working together to develop and execute the best strategies to reduce violent crime through enforcement, prevention, and reentry.

Other key players in the One Detroit Partnership include the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Michigan Department of Corrections, and local community organizations.

The Summer Surge will begin on Memorial Day and last until Labor Day in September, with a focus on reducing gun violence in Detroit’s high-crime areas. As the city prepares for another violent summer, residents are left wondering if the Summer Surge will be enough to make a difference.
