Devon Newsome, Unlawful Transfer of Firearms, New York 2023

A Georgia man has been handed a 60-month prison sentence for his role in transferring firearms to a New York resident, in a case that highlights the ongoing issue of gun trafficking in the region.

Devon Newsome, 32, of Forrest Park, Georgia, was sentenced by United States District Judge Anne M. Nardacci for unlawfully transferring 29 firearms, including stolen firearms and a handgun equipped with a machinegun conversion device, to a New York resident in Georgia on May 21, 2023.

The firearms were then transported from Georgia to a property on Western Avenue in Albany, where they were discovered by law enforcement during a search on May 23, 2023. Newsome knew the firearms were destined for New York and that neither he nor the person for whom the guns were destined were licensed importers, manufacturers, dealers, or collectors of firearms.

In addition to Newsome’s prison sentence, he was also ordered to serve a 3-year term of supervised release following his imprisonment. The sentencing is the latest development in a larger investigation into gun trafficking in the region.

Other defendants have been charged in connection with the investigation, including Anthony Luizzi, who pleaded guilty to drug and gun crimes and was sentenced to 210 months in prison and a $10,000 fine on October 1, 2024. Brandon Bartley was sentenced to 180 months in prison and a $5,000 fine for drug and gun crimes related to his possession of drugs and guns at the Western Avenue property.

The investigation into gun trafficking in the region is ongoing, with assistance from the DEA, the ATF, and local law enforcement agencies. Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexander Wentworth-Ping is prosecuting the case.

In a related development, a suspect in the investigation, Anthony Zaremski, was fatally shot during the execution of a federal search warrant on May 23, 2023, at his apartment in Clifton Park, New York. Zaremski opened fire and wounded two officers before being shot and killed.
