Devonta Cobbs, Illegal Gun Possession, Iowa 2024

A Sioux City man has been sentenced to federal prison after admitting to using and selling drugs while in possession of a firearm.

Devonta Cobbs, 23, of Sioux City, Iowa, received a 34-month prison term May 3, 2024, after a guilty plea to possession of a firearm by a drug user.

According to evidence in the case, Cobbs admitted to using marijuana and possessed multiple firearms between May 2022 and June 2022.

During an investigation into a shooting incident, officers executing search warrants on Cobbs’ property found several guns, ammunition, magazines, and over $2,000 in cash and marijuana.

Cobbs was sentenced by United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand in Sioux City. He must also serve a 2-year term of supervised release after the prison term.

There is no parole in the federal system.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), the centerpiece of the government’s violent crime reduction efforts.

Cobbs is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

The case was investigated by the Sioux City, Iowa Police Department and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Forde Fairchild.
