Dewayne Vass, Fentanyl Possession, New York 2024

BUFFALO, N.Y – In a major blow to the opioid epidemic, Dewayne Vass, a 43-year-old Amherst resident, was sentenced to 188 months in prison for possession with intent to distribute 400 grams or more of fentanyl.

According to court documents, law enforcement executed a search warrant at a Moselle Avenue residence associated with Vass, as well as at Vass’s Sunshine Drive residence, and on his vehicle on July 12, 2024. Investigators recovered large quantities of cocaine, fentanyl, approximately $127,000 in cash, a pistol, and drug paraphernalia.

The sentencing is the result of an investigation by the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, under the direction of Sheriff John Garcia, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Matthew Miraglia.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy C. Lynch, who handled the case, stated that the evidence seized during the search warrant confirmed Vass’s involvement in a large-scale fentanyl trafficking operation. “The amount of fentanyl recovered is staggering, and it’s a clear indication of the severity of Vass’s crimes,” Lynch said.

The investigation, which spanned multiple locations and agencies, demonstrates the commitment of law enforcement to disrupting and dismantling opioid trafficking rings in Western New York.

Vass’s sentence is a significant blow to the opioid epidemic, which has ravaged communities across the country. The sentence also serves as a warning to those involved in fentanyl trafficking that the authorities are working tirelessly to bring them to justice.
