McALLEN, Texas – Servando Diaz, 32, of Edcouch, Texas, is facing a lengthy prison sentence after admitting to a sickening habit: downloading and possessing child pornography. U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani announced today that Diaz has been sentenced to 144 months in federal prison.
Diaz pleaded guilty on March 19th, and U.S. District Judge Drew Tipton delivered the sentence after hearing disturbing details of Diaz’s depravity. The court learned Diaz wasn’t just a passive viewer; he actively sought out and downloaded child pornography onto numerous personal devices for both online and offline consumption. The content was described as a horrifying array of sadistic, masochistic, and bestial acts involving children.
The investigation, spanning from approximately November 30, 2022, to December 7, 2022, revealed Diaz used cryptocurrency to purchase links to this horrific material. Law enforcement was already tracking a larger commercial sexual exploitation ring that peddled child pornography in exchange for digital currency. Purchasers received links to the files via MEGA, a file hosting service. Authorities traced a transaction to Diaz’s address in Edcouch.
Diaz confessed to law enforcement on August 15, 2023, admitting to a decade-long pattern of viewing, purchasing, and downloading child pornography. He utilized platforms like Telegram and MEGA to conduct his transactions using cryptocurrency, and even paid between $50 and $150 via PayPal to access private groups on Discord or Telegram known for distributing this vile content. A forensic search of his devices uncovered a staggering 360 videos and 178 image files depicting sexually explicit acts involving prepubescent children.
Beyond the 12-year prison sentence, Diaz has been ordered to pay a $5,000 special assessment and will face 10 years of supervised release upon completion of his prison term. This supervised release will include strict restrictions on his access to children and the internet. He will also be required to register as a sex offender, a permanent mark of his heinous crimes. Diaz will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility.
The FBI conducted the investigation, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexa D. Parcell prosecuted the case. This prosecution is part of Project Safe Childhood (PSC), a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. PSC brings together federal, state, and local resources to identify, rescue, and prosecute those who prey on children. More information on PSC and internet safety resources can be found at DOJ’s PSC page and the resources tab on that page.
