McALLEN, Texas – Servando Diaz, 32, of Edcouch, Texas, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced for the horrific crime of receiving and possessing child pornography. U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani announced the sentence, a grim reminder of the dark underbelly of the internet and the predators who exploit vulnerable children.
Diaz pleaded guilty on March 19th, and U.S. District Judge Drew Tipton delivered a 144-month sentence. The court heard sickening details of Diaz’s depravity – he admitted to downloading child pornography onto numerous personal devices for his own perverse gratification, both online and offline. The collection wasn’t limited to simple images; it included a disturbing range of content, from videos of varying length to files depicting sadistic, masochistic acts, and even bestiality. Beyond the prison term, Diaz will face a $5,000 special assessment and a decade of supervised release, with strict conditions aimed at preventing further harm to children and limiting his internet access. He will also be required to register as a sex offender, a mark he’ll carry for life.
The investigation revealed Diaz’s purchases spanned from approximately November 30, 2022, to December 7, 2022. He used cryptocurrency to buy links to the child pornography, a tactic increasingly employed by offenders attempting to conceal their crimes. Law enforcement was already tracking a commercial sexual exploitation ring, uncovering how child pornography was sold and paid for through digital currencies. Links to the illicit material were then provided to purchasers via the file hosting service MEGA.
Authorities traced a specific cryptocurrency transaction back to an address in Edcouch, ultimately identifying Diaz as the purchaser. During a voluntary interview on August 15, 2023, Diaz confessed to viewing, purchasing, and downloading child pornography for roughly ten years. He utilized platforms like Telegram and MEGA to facilitate these transactions, and even paid between $50 and $150 via PayPal to gain access to private groups known for distributing this horrific content on Discord or Telegram.
A forensic examination of Diaz’s digital devices uncovered a staggering amount of abuse material: 360 videos and 178 image files depicting child pornography, including images of prepubescent children subjected to sexually explicit acts. The sheer volume of the material underscores the depth of Diaz’s depravity and the long-term harm he has inflicted. He remains in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility.
The FBI spearheaded the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexa D. Parcell prosecuting the case. This prosecution was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood (PSC), a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation. PSC brings together federal, state, and local resources to identify, apprehend, and prosecute offenders, and to rescue victims.
