BOSTON — In a shocking turn of events, twin brothers Di’lón Smith and Denzel Smith, both 29 years old, pleaded guilty to a string of charges related to fentanyl trafficking in Massachusetts.
According to court documents, the brothers conspired with others to sell fentanyl and cyclopropyl fentanyl between October 3, 2017, and November 29, 2017. Their operation was centered around a Hyannis apartment rented by Di’lón Smith, where they stored the illicit substances for street-level resale.
The brothers were caught on November 29, 2017, after a search of the apartment found them in possession of fentanyl, over 100 grams of cyclopropyl fentanyl intended for sale, a Smith & Wesson .22 caliber revolver loaded with six rounds of ammunition, a Heckler & Koch 9mm caliber pistol, and magazines loaded with 18 rounds of 9mm caliber ammunition.
The charges against the brothers include:
- Possession with intent to distribute fentanyl
- Possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance analogue (cyclopropyl fentanyl)
- Conspiracy to distribute and to possess with intent to distribute fentanyl and a controlled substance analogue
- Being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition
The Smith brothers face a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison for the first three charges, with a minimum of three years and up to a lifetime of supervised release, and a fine of up to $1 million. The charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition carries a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of $250,000.
Di’lón Smith, a/k/a Dilon Smith, and Denzel Smith, 29, are scheduled to be sentenced on March 9, 2022. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Christine Wichers and Robert E. Richardson of Acting United States Attorney Nathaniel R. Mendell’s Major Crimes Unit.
The investigation was led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, Boston Field Division, with assistance from the Barnstable Police Department.
