PHOENIX, Ariz. – On December 6, 2020, a heinous crime shook the Navajo Nation when Dion James Anagal, 44, of Chinle, Arizona, set his victim’s home on fire, resulting in her tragic death.
The victim’s life was lost in a blaze that ravaged her home, leaving behind a community in mourning. Anagal’s actions were a devastating blow to the victim’s loved ones and the entire Navajo Nation.
Following a thorough investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Navajo Nation Division of Public Safety, Anagal was brought to justice. He had previously pleaded guilty to Second Degree Murder, a charge that would prove to be a turning point in his life.
On [date], United States District Judge Douglas L. Rayes delivered a just sentence, handing down 22 years in prison, followed by five years of supervised release. Anagal’s fate was sealed, and the community could finally begin the process of healing.
The investigation and prosecution of Anagal’s case were a collaborative effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Navajo Nation Division of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Alexander Samuels and Jillian Besancon, District of Arizona, Phoenix, worked tirelessly to ensure justice was served.
