Dion Marsh, Hate Crimes, New Jersey 2023

Man Sentenced to 40 Years in Prison for Hate-Fueled Assaults on Orthodox Jewish Community

A grim chapter in Ocean County, New Jersey, has come to a close with the sentencing of Dion Marsh, 29, of Manchester, New Jersey, to 480 months in prison. Marsh pleaded guilty to a series of violent assaults on members of the Orthodox Jewish community in and around Lakewood, New Jersey.

According to court documents, Marsh committed the following crimes: (1) violating the federal Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act by willfully causing bodily injury to five victims, and attempting to kill and cause injuries with dangerous weapons to four of them, all because they were Jewish; and (2) carjacking. The incidents occurred on April 8, 2022, in Lakewood, New Jersey.

Marsh’s crimes resulted in serious physical harm to the victims, including one man who was stabbed in the chest. The community was left shaken by the brazen attacks, which were motivated by Marsh’s hatred of the Orthodox Jewish community.

U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger stated, "The threat from hate-fueled violence is a sad reality that impacts far too many people across our state and our nation. This defendant previously admitted to violently attacking five men, driving a car into four of them, stabbing one of them in the chest, and attempting to kill them simply because they were visibly identifiable as Orthodox Jews. The sentence imposed today holds Marsh accountable for his brutal and hate-filled rampage.

Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division added, "Enough is enough – hate-fueled attacks on the Orthodox Jewish community are abhorrent, unlawful and contrary to our values as Americans." Clarke emphasized the importance of protecting the civil rights of all residents, particularly those who are targeted because of their religious beliefs.

The sentencing of Dion Marsh serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing hate crimes and promoting tolerance and understanding in our communities. The FBI and law enforcement agencies will continue to work tirelessly to investigate and prosecute hate crimes, and to protect the rights of all individuals to practice their religion freely.

In conclusion, the sentencing of Dion Marsh brings a sense of closure to the victims and their families, and serves as a warning to others who would seek to commit hate-fueled crimes. The community can now begin to heal and move forward, knowing that justice has been served.
