New Jersey Man Convicted of Multi-State Kidnapping, Assault, Arson Rampage
A federal jury has convicted a Bronx, New York, man of engaging in a violent, multi-state crime spree during which he kidnapped and sexually assaulted his former girlfriend, assaulted a federal employee, set fire to a used car dealership, and rammed multiple police vehicles before being apprehended, U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger announced today.
Luis Figueroa, 41, was convicted of kidnapping (Count One); criminal sexual abuse (Count Two); possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence (Count Three); and assaulting an employee of the United States (Count Four), following a two-week trial before U.S. District Judge John Michael Vazquez in Newark federal court. Figueroa had previously pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon and arson.
The conduct for which this defendant was convicted describes an almost unimaginable level of violence and depravity.
Luis Figueroa, a Bronx, New York, man, kidnapped his former girlfriend on June 6, 2014 in Hazleton, Pennsylvania and held her hostage in New Jersey. He sexually assaulted his former girlfriend at the Kittatinny Point Visitor’s Center, which is located on federal property, after forcing her to drive across state lines. After the assault, the victim convinced Figueroa to dispose of the shotgun used in the attack.
Luis Figueroa was further convicted of ramming multiple police vehicles and setting fire to a used car dealership in Paterson, New Jersey. The defendant’s multi-state crime spree resulted in severe injuries to his victims, including a pregnant woman who was physically assaulted by Figueroa.
U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger praised the hard work and collaborative efforts of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and local and state partners involved in the investigation and prosecution of this case.
Luis Figueroa is currently awaiting sentencing.
