Knoxville Man Pleads Guilty to Aggravated Identity Theft
A Knoxville man has pleaded guilty to a federal charge of aggravated identity theft. Dios E. Tate, 31, used another person’s social security number to obtain a Tennessee identification card.
According to court documents, on November 16, 2020, Tate used the social security number of another person to obtain a Tennessee identification card from the Knox County Clerk, issued in a name other than his own.
The prosecution is the result of an ongoing operation by the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Social Security Administration – Office of Inspector General to identify people who have unlawfully used social security numbers of other persons to obtain false Tennessee identification cards.
The guilty plea was entered on May 6, 2021, in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee at Knoxville. Sentencing is scheduled for September 9, 2021, at 10:00 a.m., before the Honorable Thomas A. Varlan, United States District Judge.
Tate faces a mandatory term of two years in Federal prison, as well as a fine of up to $250,000, and supervised release of one year. Assistant United States Attorney TJ Harker represented the United States.
The case highlights the importance of protecting personal identity and the consequences of using someone else’s social security number without their permission.
