CINCINNATI – Richard Louis Crosby III, 37, of Mason, Ohio, a disbarred attorney, has pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to Social Security number fraud as part of a scheme to infiltrate law firms with fake identities.
The defendant used false identities including his elderly father’s, girlfriend’s, and even the deceased, while falsely claiming to be a University of Michigan football player and an ex-Marine. Crosby pleaded guilty to three counts of fraud, with a recommended sentence of 37 months in prison.
In November 2020, the Cincinnati Bar Association filed a complaint against Crosby. After being indicted for stealing client funds, he was disbarred by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio and sentenced to probation in June 2023.
Despite his legal troubles, Crosby continued his deceitful employment quest. He used an email alias ‘richardcwilliamsesq’ to communicate with a Washington D.C. law firm and applied for positions at firms in California and Miami. He even obtained job offers, using his girlfriend’s personal information for onboarding. However, he was eventually exposed by an inquiry from the Clermont County Child Support Enforcement Office.
In July 2023, Crosby attempted to obtain employment again, this time at a California law firm and another in Coral Gables, Florida. His lies were uncovered before hiring decisions were made.
One month prior to his federal arrest, Crosby used yet another alias to apply for a job in Michigan. When inconsistencies arose, the firm terminated their relationship. Crosby’s fraudulent scheme was exposed just days after he began his latest attempt to deceive employers.
