Dixon Sentenced to Seven Years for Wash. D.C. Shooting

WASHINGTON – The grim streets of Northeast D.C. saw justice served as Ivan Dixon, 19, was handed a seven-year sentence for the chilling September 2023 supermarket shooting.

In a statement that sent shockwaves through the city, U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith announced Dixon’s fate. The teen faced the music for his cold-blooded attack on two victims, one an intended target and the other an innocent bystander.

Today’s sentencing was a culmination of events that began with Dixon’s March 2024 guilty plea in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. He confessed to Assault with Intent to Kill, Possession of a Firearm During a Crime of Violence, and Carrying a Pistol Without a License.

The judge, Honorable Robert Okun, did not hesitate in imposing the maximum sentence for the assault charge, totaling 84 months behind bars. Dixon’s post-prison period includes three years of supervised release.

Graves and Smith commended the Metropolitan Police Department for their relentless pursuit of justice and Assistant U.S. Attorney William Lawrence for his tireless efforts in the investigation and prosecution.

The government’s evidence, which Dixon agreed to, painted a chilling picture: the young man drove past the supermarket in a Ford Transit van, then made a brazen escape after firing 16 shots at the intended target and striking an innocent bystander with five bullets. Miraculously, the bystander survived his injuries.

This sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking on Washington’s streets and the commitment to justice by those sworn to protect and serve.
