Washington – A chilling verdict was announced yesterday as Tyrone Johnson, 43, of Washington, D.C., stood convicted by a Superior Court jury on charges of aggravated assault while armed and related offenses.
The court’s decision followed a grueling two-week trial presided over by Superior Court Judge Marisa Demeo. In addition to the primary charge, Johnson was found guilty of assault with a dangerous weapon, assault with significant bodily injury while armed, possession of a firearm during each violent crime, unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a license, unlawful possession of ammunition, and possession of an unregistered firearm. Sentencing is set for September 6, 2024.
The incident occurred at Starburst Plaza on August 30, 2022, at approximately 5:40 a.m. Johnson approached the victim, asking for cigarettes but was met with a refusal. The situation escalated rapidly as Johnson drew a handgun and opened fire at close range, critically injuring the victim. He then fled to a nearby apartment complex.
Johnson’s identity was uncovered through meticulous review of video surveillance, GPS records, and ballistics evidence that linked him to the shooting at Starburst Plaza and another offense just one week prior. The case was meticulously investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Travis Wolf and Matthew Goldstein led the prosecution against Johnson, ensuring a thorough and effective legal battle that resulted in the jury’s guilty verdict.
