Edwin Alexey Gamboa, Fentanyl Possession, Arizona 2024

PHOENIX – Edwin Alexey Gamboa, 20, of Phoenix, is facing a litany of charges after authorities uncovered a stash of deadly fentanyl and illegal firearms during a traffic stop. The federal grand jury in Phoenix indicted Gamboa last week on counts including Illegal Receipt of a Firearm by a Person Under Indictment; Possession with Intent to Distribute Fentanyl; and Possession of a Firearm in Furtherance of a Drug Trafficking Offense.

On June 2, 2024, officers from the Phoenix Police Department responded to a report of a vehicle blocking traffic. They found Gamboa asleep at the wheel, surrounded by two firearms and nearly 400 counterfeit oxycodone tablets, later identified as fentanyl. Additionally, almost $2,000 in cash was discovered in Gamboa’s possession.

The investigation revealed that Gamboa had a dark history with illegal activities, having been on pretrial release for Smuggling Goods from the United States. On February 4, 2024, he attempted to smuggle firearm magazines out of the country into Mexico.

Convictions for these offenses carry severe penalties, including up to five years in prison and fines reaching $5,000,000. Gamboa’s case is currently being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Addison Owen in Phoenix and Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Houston in Tucson.

The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Phoenix Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Homeland Security Investigations, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
