A Massachusetts-based doctor is facing heat over a lucrative scheme to bilk Medicare out of hundreds of thousands of dollars for unnecessary orthotics. Dr. Alexandria Williams, a licensed physician in Massachusetts, allegedly signed orders for medically unnecessary braces for Medicare beneficiaries she never examined and who often didn’t want or need them.
Between December 2018 and April 2019, Williams’ scheme netted her an estimated $630,000 in false claims from a telemedicine company. The orders were pre-populated based on telemarketing calls made to Medicare beneficiaries and contained multiple false statements.
The telemedicine company’s owner had pleaded guilty to his role in the scheme in 2020. Williams allegedly worked with a staffing company that connected her with the telemedicine firm and received payment for each order she reviewed.
Now, the U.S. Attorney’s Office is taking aim at Williams, accusing her of causing the submission of false claims to Medicare. If convicted, she could face serious penalties.
