Tri-Area Community Health, a Federally Qualified Health Center in Roanoke, VA, has been caught bilking Medicare out of $513,000. For nearly four years, the clinic faked doctor’s supervision on Annual Wellness Visits, raking in the cash for phony medical exams.
Between August 2022 and December 2025, pharmacists at the clinic performed the wellness visits without a doctor’s oversight, billing Medicare under the names of physicians who had nothing to do with the exams.
But Tri-Area Community Health didn’t just sit back and collect the cash. The clinic cooperated with investigators, conducting its own internal review and helping to identify the improperly reimbursed claims.
Now, the clinic is paying the price, coughing up $513,729.90 to resolve the allegations. The US Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Virginia, the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General, and the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Counsel to the Inspector General all worked together on the case.
