Domestic Violence Abusers with Guns Five Times More Likely to Kill Partners
As the U.S. Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) expands its Firearms Technical Assistance Project (FTAP) to 18 sites nationwide, new data highlights the alarming risk of domestic violence homicides committed with firearms. In a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic violence, offenders with a history of domestic violence are five times more likely to kill their partners when a gun is present in the home.
The FTAP expansion, which will provide an estimated $6 million in funding for up to 12 new sites and $4 million for training and technical assistance, is a critical step in reducing the staggering number of domestic violence homicides and injuries committed with firearms. According to OVW Acting Director Allison Randall, enforcing gun laws and keeping firearms away from perpetrators of domestic violence is essential to keeping victims safe.
The FTAP, launched in 2019 by OVW and the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, aims to help communities implement policies, protocols, and promising practices to prevent abusers from accessing firearms in domestic violence cases. The project has already shown promising results, with existing sites achieving significant reductions in domestic violence homicides and injuries.
As part of the expansion, OVW will award $2 million to help sites implement effective firearms responses and an additional $2 million to train and support sites on the cultural context of domestic violence in underserved communities. The project also includes $750,000 to continue a domestic violence and firearms national resource center.
The solicitation for the FTAP expansion is open until September 20, 2021, with a non-binding Letter of Intent due by September 7, 2021. The project is a key component of the Justice Department’s comprehensive strategy for reducing violent crime, which includes enforcing federal law prohibiting individuals with domestic violence misdemeanor and felony convictions from possessing firearms.
