Dominic Houston, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, South Dakota 2022

A local man has been hit with serious federal charges after a grand jury indicted him on a weapons offense. Dominic Houston, age 24, was charged with Felon in Possession of a Firearm, a crime that carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in federal prison and/or a $250,000 fine, three years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.

Houston appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on September 20, 2022, and pleaded not guilty to the Indictment.

According to the Indictment, on August 17, 2022, Houston, being a convicted felon, knowingly possessed a firearm. The charge is merely an accusation, and Houston is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

The investigation into this case was led by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges is prosecuting the case.

Houston was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial. A trial date has not been set.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. PSN was launched by the federal government in 2001, and has since been strengthened through various initiatives.

Houston, a resident of Eagle Butte, South Dakota, is currently facing serious federal charges. His case will be closely watched by law enforcement and community leaders as they work to make their neighborhoods safer.
